I-9 EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY VERIFICATION FORM

Below are special instructions following certain changes to the I-9 process... Press the link for a more detailed explanation.

All United States employers are responsible for the completion and retention of this form for each individual they hire for employment in America. This includes both citizens and non-citizens.  On this form, the employer must verify the employment eligibility and identity documents presented by the employee and record this information on the I-9 Form. Look for the acceptable documents listed and pay close attention to the changes under the "Special Instructions" section. This form is valid with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service, the Immigration and Naturalization Service and the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration.

No filing is required with the Bureau Of Immigration and Customs Enforcement(ICE). This form must be kept by the employer for one year after employment is terminated or for three years after the date of hire, depending on whichever is later. The I-9 Form must be available for inspection by authorized United States Government officials such as ICE or the Department of Labor.

There is no filing fee associated with this form.

Here are the special instructions one should take into account. The following changes have occurred:
 
Form I-766(Employment Authorization Document), although it is not listed on the 11/21/91 version, is an acceptable List A document #10.
 
Form I-151, however, is no longer an acceptable List A document #5.
 
Please be aware that the following list of documents have been removed from the acceptable identity and work authorization documents:
 
Certificate of U.S. Citizenship (List A #2)
Certificate of Naturalization (List A #3)
Unexpired Re-entry Permit (List A #8)
and
Unexpired Refugee Travel Document (List A #9)
